Reading

Our Reading curriculum is centred around books.

From the day that children start their time at Thornhill Primary they start a reading journey which takes them from learning to decode simple books through to reading children's novels. More information about phonics can be found in the phonics section of the curriculum tab.

The progression below gives an idea of what children experience at different stages in their school life. However, it is important to remember that every child goes on a slightly different reading journey so this progression won't always suit every child.

Throughout your child's time at Thornhill we will share books with them. The books have been specifically chosen to link with the history topics that we teach in the different year groups.

We have chosen a vast range of books covering many themes and genres to provide your child with a breadth of reading experiences during their time with us.

Reading at home

Even though children read frequently in school, it is essential that children read regularly at home in order to develop a habit of reading that will last a lifetime. We recommend and even insist upon reading with your child/ren 4 times per week, but more is better. For the first few years we'll be sending children home with a book that is suitable for them to read. However, as children develop confidence and become more experienced readers, they should enjoy the pleasure of choosing their own books from libraries and shops. Here is a helpful little guide to help children choose the right book for them.
