  • Christmas Letter from the Head

    Published 16/12/22

    16th December 2022

    Dear Parents/Carers

This letter comes with heartfelt Thank yous from us all.

Thank you for all your continued and tremendous support over this past term. It has been a busy one in school and we are sure we all agree, ‘What a year!’  We hope the Christmas break allows us all to get some much needed down time and that we can rest up for the exciting new term ahead.

Thank you to all the staff, children and parents for your hard work in making the festive season so enjoyable at Thornhill. The children in Nursery, Reception and KS1 loved their Performances this year and were absolutely fantastic, we are so proud of them.

Children loved their Christmas Jumper day where we all came completely off timetable to enjoy a day filled with crafts and activities. Christmas Lunch was enjoyed by all and even the Brussel sprouts went down a treat! The atmosphere in school was creative and exciting.

We all love the run up to Christmas, and after the last couple of years it has been great to watch the children get excited with the Christmas Fayre, Christmas Craft day, Christmas Lunch, performances, treats in class galore and their very special visitor who visited them all today – even our Year 6 children loved it proving you are never too old for a visit from Santa! Children were given a gift of sweets from Thornhill – we hope they enjoy them.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility when we had to close Grove Road site due to the Gas Works. It was disappointing to have to move the KS1 performances and we are very lucky to have such supportive and empathetic parents. Years 1 and 2 weren’t put off at all even though they performed at Silver Birch site with no scenery, no tree, no costumes and totally different props. They kept going showing how resilient they are. I’m sure you will remember this with laughter and fondness in the years to come.

    Internet safety

During the Christmas break can we please request that you continue to check your child’s online activity at home. We are very concerned at the amount of children that are able to tell us how to stay safe online during internet safety lessons in school but are then overheard having discussions with peers that make us think that they don’t believe the rules and advise we give applies to them. Please find below a link to a page, which gives lots of good advice to parents. https://www.internetmatters.org/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5NGepOGm3wIVBOJ3Ch3skQsYEAAYASAAEgLhtPD_BwE

On behalf of all the staff at Thornhill, Mr Gunning and I would like to sincerely thank you all and wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

We look forward to welcoming all children back to school on Wednesday 4th January 2023.

We’ll kick off 2023 with the full Newsletter explaining the upcoming term.

    Happy Christmas to you all.

    Mrs Waite & Mr Gunning

  • Missing Christmas Photographs

    Published 16/12/22

    16th December 2022

    Dear Parents / Guardians

    RE: Christmas Photos

Unfortunately, due to the Royal Mail strikes, our photo order was delayed. Miss Gow went to pick it up from the sorting office in Dunstable this morning, however, only 3 out of 4 parcels were there, the other is still lost in the system somewhere!

The missing parcel seems to contain some of the 12x8 photos, unfortunately.

Any photos that we do have will be sent home today, but those that have not been delivered will, unfortunately, not make it to you before Christmas. We will get these to you as soon as possible in January. If for any reason these photos do not make it to us, we will issue a refund for the missing photographs.

Please accept our apologies, this really is out of our control, but we are trying our best to locate them and get them to you.

    Kind regards

    Miss Gow

    Christmas Photos

    Dear Parents & Carers

Due to the great success that we had last year with the Christmas photos, we will be doing the same again this year.

On Tuesday 29th November, children can come to school in their Christmas clothes/jumpers/dresses for the day and have their photos taken next to our Christmas Tree and against a festive background. We will take individual photos and sibling groups. These make lovely Christmas gifts for you to send to family and friends.

Parents will have the opportunity to order copies of the photos in a choice of sizes to get in time for Christmas.

We will still be having the usual Christmas Jumper Day on 8th December, however, we are doing the extra day on the 29th November to allow us plenty of time to get the photos ordered.

Prices will range from 50p – £2.50 per photo depending on size, more details will follow on the order form.

A special email address has been set up specifically for Christmas photo enquiries and orders.

If you would like your child/ren to have their Christmas photo taken please email photos@thornhillprimary.co.uk by Friday 25th November.

    Kind regards

    Mr Gunning & Miss Gow

  • Letter from The Linmere Team

    Published 21/11/22

    Dear Parents and carers

You will be aware that the development of Linmere is currently being delivered to the north of Thornhill Primary School.

Silver Birch Avenue, which links Sundon Road to the school, will become a key access point for the school. We have worked closely with Central Bedfordshire Council and Thornhill Primary School to ensure that the designs for the school and for Linmere are fully coordinated, and that the school becomes a link between the new development and Houghton Regis.

However, Silver Birch Avenue is currently in continual use by heavy construction traffic, and as such we have a Health and Safety obligation to minimise non-essential traffic.

For these reasons it has been agreed with Thornhill Primary School and Central Bedfordshire Council that pupils would not be able to access Thornhill Primary School from Silver Birch Avenue until September 2023.

We do though understand the inconvenience this may cause to those living nearby, and we will therefore allow pupils travelling to Thornhill school on foot or by bicycle to use the route shown in green below.

Whilst we would prefer not to have to restrict access, for Health & Safety reasons drop-offs by car anywhere along Silver Birch Avenue or elsewhere within the development will not be allowed until September 2023.

For the sake of everyone’s safety we cannot compromise on this, and if not adhered to we will unfortunately have to restrict access for all.

    Many thanks for your understanding

    The Linmere Team

  • Parking on Silver Birch Avenue

    Published 04/11/22

Recently, there have been a number of parents parking on Silver Birch Avenue to drop off or collect children from school. As we have said before, this is absolutely not allowed.

We have just been in a meeting with the land developer who has explained that there are serious health and safety risks associated with parking on Silver Birch Avenue and that this must not continue.

Access to the school from the Silver Birch Avenue site is currently only for residents of the Linmere development via the pedestrian footpath.

Unfortunately, we have been informed that if parents continue to park on Silver Birch Avenue, the road will be closed to all traffic and there will be no access to the school from the Silver Birch site at all.

We ask that all parents take this warning seriously so as not to affect the day to day running of the school.
