Intent, Implementation, Impact
Curriculum Intent:
At Thornhill Primary school, we are dedicated to empowering children through a sustainable, diverse, and arts-enriched education. Our vision is to cultivate independent thinkers and problem-solvers who are future-focused, with a deep understanding of how to care for both their local community and the wider world. Already an accredited Eco-School with the Green Flag Award, we believe our mission to help children understand what a sustainable future looks like is well underway.
Grounded in British values and guided by the principles of resilience, peace, friendship, confidence, courage, and appreciation, we aim to provide a nurturing environment where every child in our diverse community can thrive. We are committed to building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy while offering pupils a rich exposure to the arts, ensuring they experience opportunities that may be unavailable outside of school life.
Personal development is central to our curriculum. We believe in fostering individual growth by allowing all children to engage in personal development electives every Friday afternoon. These electives, ranging from crochet to photography and music, enable pupils to explore their interests, build confidence, and develop new skills.
Implementation:
Our curriculum is closely tied to the heritage of our local area, which has deep roots in food, farming and changes in society. This is reflected in our history and geography lessons, providing pupils with a meaningful connection to their surroundings.
We take a subject-specific approach to learning, allowing each discipline to shine. Writing, however, is woven throughout the curriculum, enabling pupils to document and reflect on their learning experiences. We emphasise hands-on, experiential learning, particularly in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), where children are encouraged to lead their own learning in a newly redesigned environment. Further up the school, we promote collaboration to foster a community of engaged learners.
Our arts and music programmes are a key focus, with pupils receiving instruction from specialist teachers. Music offerings include lessons in guitar, pBone, steel pan, djembe, and singing, while an art specialist works with every class to nurture creativity.
Through our curriculum, we strive to equip all children with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to succeed academically and personally, preparing them to be responsible and confident citizens of tomorrow.
Impact:
Our results speak for themselves. Have a look at the data below showing how our school compares to national and local authority schools in key areas.
